Rare Books Take on an Added Dimension

As technology continually reshapes the world, modern academic libraries are finding innovative new digital projects and presentations to breathe renewed life into rare treasures from centuries past. Moving from the physical to the digital is allowing McGill students, faculty and researchers to explore ROAAr‘s rich holdings in creative new ways.

Last year, the McGill Library launched its new Research Commons, an innovative, collaborative space that provides next-generation tools to students and researchers. The Commons includes a high-tech visualization studio capable of projecting high-resolution images onto a large video wall comprised of eight video screens.

This October, ROAAr put that new technology to the test during a public lecture by Emeritus Professor Ian MacLaren (University of Alberta) about prominent 19th-century Canadian artist Paul Kane (1810-1871). Kane travelled from Ontario to the northwest quadrant of North America in the 1840s, sketching and painting the life and customs of the indigenous peoples across the vast northwestern Canadian wilderness. This initiative would eventually grow into a key documentary and visual history of the west, a portion of which was published in London in 1859 as Wanderings of an Artist amongthe Indians of North America : from Canada to Vancouver’s Island and Oregon through the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Territory and Back Again.

The Library’s rich collection provides researchers with a wealth of Paul Kane editions including the 1859 first edition ofWanderings and related books in the prized Lande Collection of Canadiana and the Lande Arkin Collection of Western Canada such as: Catlin’s Letters & Notes on the Manners, customs and condition of the North American Indians (New York, 1842); and the extraordinary copy of Warre’s Sketches in North  America and the Oregon Territory, (London, c1848) with chromolithographed plates. The Blackader-Lauterman rare collections. holds numerous important catalogues raisonnés on Kane the artist.

Inspired by those materials, ROAAr co-sponsored MacLaren’s public lecture about the transformation of Kane’s original notes and sketches into the published work. In his talk, “From ‘nothing but a pasenger [sic]’ to Canadian Hero: Paul Kane’s Authorship of Wanderingsof an Artist (1859),” MacLaren used Kane’s field notes and drawings to make a meticulous comparison between the first draft of Kane’s manuscript copy versus the published work and its embellishment to fulfill the expectations of a reading public which had been nourished by scenes of the Wild West from prior sources.

This was not only the first public event sponsored by ROAAr, but also a prime opportunity to utilize the Research Commons as an alternative setting, outside the walls of RBSC yet within the Library. By virtue of having the digital images, the audience could learn from the surrogate in lieu of the original, and take advantage of its added digital value: blown-up images, produced with extra graphic work, which allow for unfolding layers of data showcasing the complexities of the illustrations.

Kane’s national reputation and appeal attracted a wide variety of audiences from the academic community: from book and Canadian history to indigenous and cultural studies, as well as from the general public. Understanding the importance and the cross-disciplinary nature of the topic, ROAAr co-sponsored this public lecture organized by the Montreal Book History Group, a group led by Professor Eli MacLaren, McGill English Department, and Marie-Claude Felton, Affiliate Member at McGill’s History Department.

 

 

 

Good things happen with our collections when there is collaboration with our colleagues. The image scanning and enhancements were achieved with the graphic skills of Greg Houston, New Media & Digitization Administrator in McGill’s Digital Library Services, with whom RBSC collaborates for many of its high-resolution digitization requests. Les livres rares prennent une autre dimension

Alors que la technologie remodèle continuellement notre monde, les bibliothèques universitaires modernes utilisent la technologie numérique dans des présentations et des projets novateurs de manière à insuffler une nouvelle vie aux trésors rares des siècles passés. Passer du physique au numérique permet aux étudiants, professeurs et chercheurs de McGill d’explorer les richesses du ROAAr de façon créative.

L’année dernière, la bibliothèque McGill a lancé son nouveau Research Commons, un espace novateur collaboratif qui offre aux étudiants et chercheurs des outils de nouvelle génération. Cet espace comprend un studio de visualisation de pointe capable de projeter des images à haute résolution sur un grand mur constitué de huit écrans vidéo.

En octobre, le ROAAr a mis cette nouvelle technologie à l’épreuve dans le cadre d’une conférence donnée par le professeur émérite Ian MacLaren (Université de l’Alberta) au sujet du célèbre artiste canadien Paul Kane qui a vécu au XIXe siècle (1810-1871). Kane a voyagé de l’Ontario jusqu’au nord-ouest de l’Amérique du Nord dans les années 1840, pour esquisser et peindre des tableaux représentant la vie et les coutumes des peuples indigènes dans la vaste étendue sauvage du Nord-ouest canadien. Cette initiative a finalement donné lieu à un important documentaire illustré sur l’histoire de l’Ouest, dont une partie a été publiée à Londres en 1859 dans un ouvrage intitulé: Wanderings of an Artist among the Indians of North America : from Canada to Vancouver’s Island and Oregon through the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Territory and Back Again.

La riche collection de la bibliothèque offre aux chercheurs une foule de documents publiés par Paul Kane, telle que la première édition de Wanderings publiée en 1859, ainsi que d’autres sources contextuelles secondaires dans la précieuse collection de Canadiana, et la collection d’Arkin sur l’Ouest canadien de Lande. Les catalogues raisonnés plus récents qui se retrouvent dans les collections rares de Blackader-Lauterman.

 

 

 

 

La transformation des notes et croquis originaux de Kane dans l’ouvrage publié en 1859 a été le sujet de la conférence du professeur Ian MacLaren en octobre. Durant sa présentation intitulée « From ‘nothing but a pasenger [sic]’ to Canadian Hero: Paul Kane’s Authorship of Wanderings of an Artist (1859) », MacLaren a utilisé les notes et les croquis de Kane prisent sur le terrain pour faire une comparaison minutieuse entre la première ébauche du manuscrit de Kane et l’ouvrage publié avec les embellissements visant à répondre aux attentes des lecteurs à qui on avait servi des scènes du Far West en provenance de sources antérieures.

Ce n’était pas seulement le premier événement public parrainé par le ROAAr, c’était aussi une excellente occasion d’utiliser le Research Commons comme cadre alternatif, en dehors des murs du groupe des Livres rares et collections spécialisées tout en demeurant à l’intérieur de la bibliothèque. Grâce à la numérisation, le public pouvait étudier la reproduction plutôt que l’original et profiter de la valeur ajoutée de la technologie numérique : images agrandies, créées grâce à un travail graphique supplémentaire, permettant d’accéder à des couches de données qui mettaient en évidence la complexité des illustrations.

La réputation de Kane et l’intérêt qu’il suscite à l’échelle nationale ont attiré un public d’une grande diversité, et provenant  notamment du milieu universitaire: l’ histoire de l’art, études littéraires, l’histoire du Canada, l’histoire du livre et des études autochtones et culturelles. Réalisant l’importance et le caractère interdisciplinaire du sujet, le ROAAr a parrainé conjointement cette conférence publique avec le Groupe d’Histoire du Livre de Montréal, un groupe organisé par le professeur Eli MacLaren, du département de littérature anglaise à McGill et Marie-Claude Felton, membre affilié au département d’histoire de McGill.

 

 

Nos collections connaissent du succès quand nous collaborons entre collègues. La numérisation et les améliorations des images ont été possibles grâce aux compétences en graphisme de Greg Houston, l’administrateur des nouveaux médias et de la numérisation des services de la bibliothèque numérique de McGill, avec qui nous faisons affaire pour bon nombre de demandes de numérisation à haute résolution. L’événement a été coordonnée par Ann Marie Holland, bibliothécaire de liaison, spécialiste en histoire de l’imprimerie, et représentant de la bibliothèque au sein du Groupe d’Histoire du Livre de Montréal. Les personnes qui ont participé à la mise en œuvre du mur de visualisation  : Mike Groenendyk, bibliothécaire de liaison à la Bibliothèque des sciences humanes et sociales; et  pour le travail technique et mise en place: Jennifer Garland, bibliothécaire de liaison, arts et architecture, et Timothy Sullivan et Connor Peltz, navigateurs étudiants du groupe Livres rares et collections spécialisées.
