Masterclass | Be a partner in your health: how to find & evaluate health information (hybrid, English event)

We are each in charge of our own health and well-being and having the right information can help us stay healthy and recover when we are not well. The Internet is filled with health information, some trustworthy and evidence-based, and some designed to sell something or to misinform. Each year books are published that make big claims about health topics, some are based on evidence, and some are nothing more than one person’s opinion. This lecture will provide some tips for how to find and evaluate health information and will be presented by Francesca Frati, Interim Head Librarian at the McGill Schulich Library of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Engineering.

Nous sommes tous responsables de notre santé et de notre bien-être, et il est essentiel de pouvoir compter sur les bonnes informations pour rester en santé ou pour bien récupérer dans le cas contraire. L’internet représente une mine d’informations sur la santé, mais alors que certaines de celles-ci ont été éprouvées et sont dignes de confiance, d’autres cherchent plutôt à nous vendre des produits ou à nous embrouiller. Chaque année, de nouvelles affirmations sont publiées sur divers sujets touchant la santé et il devient difficile de départager les faits des opinions. L’objectif de cette conférence est de vous communiquer des conseils pour vous aider à trouver et à évaluer les informations qui comptent. La conférence sera présenté par Francesca Frati, bibliothécaire en chef intérimaire à la bibliothèque Schulich des sciences physiques, des sciences de la vie et de génie. L’événement se déroulera en anglais.

Book history advances histories of knowledge from around the world, it records changes in the organization of knowledge, reveals the development of classification systems, the circulation of ideas, the impact of books on literacy and on the establishment of archives and libraries.
The exhibit Textures of Book History includes irreplaceable witnesses to the story of book history from its origins as clay tablets through the mass-produced nineteenth-century editions.
Join us for a 30-minute tour with curator Ann Marie Holland, Rare Books Librarian and Curator of the Colgate History of Printing Collection.

Open House & Tour: Osler Library of the History of Medicine

Join us for a tour of the historic Osler Library! The Osler Library of the History of Medicine opened in 1929 to house the collection of rare medical and other books donated by Sir William Osler, the renowned physician and McGill graduate and professor. Today the collection has grown to over 100 000 works including older, rare materials as well as current books and periodicals about the history of the health sciences and related areas.
The library recently reopened after a fire in 2018. As a major resource for historical research in health sciences, the curators have placed their focus on expanding the collection to provide a more inclusive understanding of medical practices from around the world.

Venez visiter les locaux historiques de la Bibliothèque Osler! La Bibliothèque Osler d’histoire de la médecine a ouvert ses portes en 1929 pour accueillir la collection de livres médicaux rares et d’autres ouvrages offerts par Sir William Osler, médecin renommé, diplômé et professeur de McGill. Enrichie au fil des ans, la collection compte aujourd’hui plus de 100 000 ouvrages, dont des documents anciens et rares ainsi que des livres et des périodiques actuels sur l’histoire des sciences de la santé et des domaines connexes.
La bibliothèque a récemment rouvert ses portes après un incendie survenu en 2018. Ressource majeure pour la recherche historique en sciences de la santé, la collection est constamment enrichie par l’équipe de conservation dans le but de brosser un portrait inclusif des pratiques médicales du monde entier.

McGilliana: 200 years of Student Life
Objects, photographs, and ephemera offer fragments and glimpses of life in another time, showing us details of a larger picture. 200 items have been selected for the occasion of McGill University’s bicentennial anniversary. Each item in this exhibition is part of one or many stories about the people who made the items, the people who used them, and those who chose to keep them. They speak to a larger narrative about the changing experience of being a student at McGill University throughout its 200-year history. These items also tell us about the way that institutions create and maintain their own memories, about the way McGill’s archives play a role in the university’s present and future. In each category, you will find a selection of items drawn from the McGill University Archives; each one representing the many different parts of the life of a student.

McGilliana : 200 ans de vie étudiante
Objets, photographies et éphémères offrent des fragments et des aperçus d’une autre époque, nous montrant des détails d’un tableau plus vaste. 200 objets ont été sélectionnés pour célébrer le bicentenaire de l’Université McGill. Chaque objet de cette exposition fait partie d’une ou de plusieurs histoires concernant les personnes qui les ont fabriqués, celles qui les ont utilisés et celles qui ont choisi de les conserver. Ils évoquent une narration plus large sur l’évolution de l’expérience étudiante à l’Université McGill au cours de ses 200 ans d’histoire. Ces objets nous parlent également de la manière dont les institutions créent et entretiennent leur propre mémoire, ainsi que du rôle que jouent les archives de McGill dans le présent et l’avenir de l’université. Dans chaque catégorie, vous trouverez une sélection d’objets tirés des archives de l’Université McGill, chacun représentant les nombreuses facettes de la vie étudiante.

As we look back and forward, this is a perfect moment to re-discover and celebrate our history in new ways through the Libraries’ vintage-inspired Ex Libris Collection. In collaboration with staff from Le James Bookstore, staff members from different Libraries divisions searched high and low for some of the best public domain content from our rare and special collections. Puzzles and pencil cases, notebooks and notecards, magnets and mugs….from our library to yours, check out a few of our favourite things!
