Call for Applications | Michele Larose – Osler Library Artist-in-Residence Programme

Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Michele Larose, artist and paediatric neuropsychiatrist who trained in psychiatry and child psychiatry at McGill and in visual arts at Curtin University in Australia, the Osler Library of the History of Medicine has established an artist-in-residence programme.

The award supports visual artists visiting the university to create works that address contemporary and/or historical subjects in medicine and the health sciences that are inspired by the rich and diverse collections held by the Osler Library and/or other sources at McGill, which may include McGill faculties and hospitals. Possible projects can include, but are not limited to: painting; photography; performance; sculpture; and digital, video or installation art.

The Michele Larose – Osler Library Artist-in-Residence award, valued at $6,000, will be given annually to one or more deserving candidates with a degree in Studio Arts or a related field and/or a history of exhibiting artistic work in professional venues.

The recipient will receive assistance from the staff of the Osler Library and will have full access to the library’s world-class historical and contemporary collections as well as other sources. Please note that the artist will be accommodated as well as possible, but that there is no dedicated studio space available. The award is intended to cover travel, materials, and related expenses incurred by the artist; the amount given is set at $6,000, from which taxes may be deducted, and will be paid in two parts: half at the beginning of the residency, the other half upon completion of the residency requirements.

During the tenure of the Larose-Osler Artist-in-Residence, he or she will be responsible for:

1. Working on the project;
2. Giving a public presentation about the project;
3. Exhibiting or performing the work (see osler exhibit cases and spaces pdf); and
4. Submitting a report on the project, suitable for publication in the Osler Library Newsletter.
5. Completing the work by April 30, 2026.

The Larose-Osler Artist-in-Residence will be encouraged to meet with students and faculty members and to take part in the life and culture of the University.

The work will remain the property of the artist, however, recognition of support should be given to Dre Michele Larose and to the Osler Library for the History of Medicine.

Interested artists should send the following information to the library:

1. A project description (1 page);
2. A proposed timeline;
3. CV;
4. Two letters of recommendation; and
5. Samples of work (please reduce large files as much as possible while still making them legible).

Michele Larose – Programme d’artiste-en-résidence de la Bibliothèque Osler

Grâce à la générosité du Dre Michele Larose, artiste et neuropsychiatre pédiatrique qui a suivi une formation en psychiatrie et pédopsychiatrie à McGill et est aussi diplômée en arts visuels à l’Université Curtin en Australie, la Bibliothèque Osler de l’histoire de la médecine a mis en place un programme d’artiste-en-résidence.

Le prix soutient des artistes en arts visuels qui comptent visiter l’université dans le but de créer des œuvres qui traitent de sujets contemporains et / ou historiques en médecine et en sciences de la santé. De plus l’œuvre devra s’inspiré des collections riches et diverses détenues par la bibliothèque Osler et / ou d’autres sources à McGill, comme à la Facultés et hôpitaux de McGill. Les projets peuvent inclure, sans s’y limiter à : la peinture ; la photographie ; la performance ; la sculpture ; l’art numérique, et la vidéo ou d’installation.

Le prix d’artiste-en-résidence Michele Larose – Bibliothèque Osler, d’une valeur de 6 000 $, sera décerné chaque année à un ou plusieurs candidats détenant un diplôme en arts du studio ou dans un domaine connexe et / ou ayant présenté des œuvres artistiques dans des lieux professionnels.

Le récipiendaire recevra l’aide du personnel de la bibliothèque d’Osler et aura un accès complet aux collections historiques et contemporaines de classe mondiale de la bibliothèque ainsi qu’à d’autres sources. Veuillez noter que l’artiste sera accommodé au mieux, mais qu’il n’y a pas de studio dédié disponible. Le prix est destiné à couvrir les frais de voyage, de matériel et les dépenses connexes engagées par l’artiste ; le montant donné est fixé à 6 000 $, dont les taxes peuvent être déduites, et sera payé en deux parties : la moitié au début de la résidence, l’autre moitié à la fin des conditions de résidence.

Pendant le mandat, l’artiste-en-résidence Larose-Osler, aura pour responsabilités de :

1. Travailler sur le projet ;
2. Donner une présentation publique sur le projet ;
3. Exposer et exécuter l’œuvre (voir un sommaire des espaces d’exposition et des vitrines de la bibliothèque Osler (en anglais)) ;
4. Soumettre un rapport sur le projet, pouvant être publié dans le bulletin de la bibliothèque Osler.
5. Terminer les travaux d’ici le 30 avril 2026.

L’artiste-en-résidence de Larose-Osler sera encouragé à rencontrer les étudiants et les professeurs et à participer à la vie et à la culture de l’Université.

L’œuvre restera la propriété de l’artiste, cependant, une considération pour Dre Michele Larose et pour la Bibliothèque Osler doit être accordée.

Les artistes intéressés doivent envoyer les informations suivantes :
