Katherine Hanz, Associate Dean, User Services

The McGill Library is pleased to welcome Katherine Hanz as the new Associate Dean, User Services, on a four-year term, ending May 2025.

Katherine Hanz has been leading the User Services team on an interim basis since last year. Hanz will continue to provide leadership in numerous areas including circulation, reference, and instructional services in the Library’s physical and virtual spaces. She will also spearhead the development and day-to-day management of services delivered through McGill’s branch library system.

Hanz joined the Library in 2009 as a liaison librarian in the Education Library and Curriculum Resource Centre. Hanz led the coordination of lending and access services across all library units as the coordinator and subsequently head of lending & access services from March 2017 to August 2020. This included staffing of the McLennan-Redpath single service point, organizing course reserves and the physical management of print collections. Hanz holds a Master of Library & Information Science from McGill University and Master and Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature from Guelph University. Prior to her time at McGill, Hanz worked as a research librarian at Concordia University in the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance.

The current renewal of the Schulich Library of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Engineering coupled with the upcoming revitalization of the McLennan-Redpath Complex will make the next five to seven years a busy time at the Library. Hanz will head the creation of an innovative library user service strategy and space program across the entire Library system that reflects the current and future needs of its users.

“I am so pleased to have Katherine join the leadership team as we continue to shape and refine our efforts around Fiat Lux and the Collection Management Facility,” said Colleen Cook, Trenholme Dean of Libraries. “Over the last twelve years, Katherine has left a lasting impression on the many students and colleagues she has worked with. Her experience, energy, innovative approach to challenging situations, and her unwavering commitment to McGill, its people, and their needs will move the library forward in exciting new ways.”

Please join us in congratulating Katherine Hanz in her role and in wishing her continued success.
